HISTORY OF CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOL
THANKSGIVING SERVICE
On Tuesday, 23rd July 2024, at 9:15am, a thanksgiving service was held at Christ Church and St. Stephen’s, Cabul Road, London, SW11 2PN, to mark the closure of the school.
The event celebrated the rich history and cherished memories of Christ Church CE Primary School, both past and present.
The service included:
Readings, prayers and psalms given by Father Geoffrey
Prayers of Thanksgiving written by the children of Christ Church School
Hymns such as ‘Here I Am Lord’, ‘Father We Adore You’, ‘Holy Holy’, ‘As The Deer’ and ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful'
An invitation to Holy Communion
A procession of crosses with children carrying them down the aisle to the altar, with one of these crosses which previously hung in the school hall being passed over to a pupil of Sacred Heart RC Primary School who formally attended Christ Church School
The headteacher Mrs Colette Morris addressing the congregation
The deputy headteacher Mrs Bernie Kean also addressing the congregation
During the service, two displays were erected at the rear of the church. These were created by former pupil, Adam Mundy and current teacher at the school, Louise Woods. One side of the display featured a timeline of the school's 158-year history, whilst the other side featured photographic memories of Christ Church School from 1960 to 2024.
Also, next to the pulpit hung
a banner made of fabric depicting Jesus over Battersea which was created in the 1990s. This banner used to hang proudly in the school's hall for many years until the early 2000s.
Those present at the service included staff and pupils from Christ Church School, past pupils, parents of past pupils, former staff, school governors, members of the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE), Mrs Nicola Byrne, the Associate Headteacher of nearby Sacred Heart RC Primary School and a number of former Christ Church School pupils who had already made the transition to Sacred Heart School.
