History of Christ Church CE Primary School | The Closure of the School
HISTORY OF CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOL
THE CLOSURE OF THE SCHOOL
In December 2023, the
future of the school was put in doubt when the governors of the school decided
to initiate a consultation process on the proposed closure of the school in
Summer 2024 in response to the declining number of pupils across the borough of
Wandsworth and the impact this has had on the financial stability of the school. In September 2023, only 95 places were taken out of a possible 210.
In February 2024, the results of the consultation were published and notice was given to discontinue Christ Church CE Primary School in Battersea.
On 18th April 2024, the Children’s Committee met at Wandsworth Town Hall and considered the proposals and they unanimously supported the recommendations for the discontinuance (closure) of Christ Church School with effect from 31 August 2024.
The full council Executive then met on 22nd April 2024 and they agreed to adopt the recommendations given in the report to close the school.
END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS
With confirmation that the school would close on 31st August, the school and parents planned for the end of year celebrations.
Celebrations included:
Children decorating their own tote bags and t-shirts which featured the school badge
A whole school beach trip to Littlehampton
A Thanksgiving Service in Christ Church and St Stephen's church
A musical performed on the penultimate day of term
A Leavers Service in the school hall on the penultimate day of term
And so on Wednesday 24th July 2024, the final day of term came for the last pupils of Christ Church C of E Primary School as they finished at 13:30 and the doors were closed for good.
EFFECTS OF CLOSURE
With news of the school's impending closure, many parents decided to transition their children to new schools before the end of the year. By July 2024, only 52 out of the 95 pupils enrolled were left at the school.
With this reduction in pupil numbers, a couple of year groups were merged, such as the foundation years (Nursery and Reception), Years 1 and 2 and Years 3 and 4.
This meant that the classroom that was previously used for Reception pupils was no longer needed and so was made into a designated art room and the former Year 5 classroom was converted into the school's library.
