HISTORY OF CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOL
1944
On July 16th 1944 at 10:25am, a V1 Flying Bomb damaged parts of Batten Street, Duffield Street and Lubeck Street.
BLACK: TOTAL DESCTRUCTION
PURPLE: DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR
DARK RED: SERIOUSLY DAMAGED (DOUBTFUL IF REPAIRABLE)
LIGHT RED: SERIOUSLY DAMAGED (REPAIRABLE AT COST)
The bomb sadly killed 29 people, destroyed 12 houses, seriously damaged 30 houses and left the school hall damaged beyond repair.
Pupils at the school had to use the corridor for their morning services, assembly and other school events for almost 20 years after experiencing difficulties and delays associated with the school rebuilding.
Events such as the traditional Christmas Nativity were performed in the church up until the new school hall was built.
On November 21st 1944 at 11.14pm, a V2 rocket also destroyed both the church and vicarage. This meant many of the documents concerning Christ Church School were destroyed that night.
During the second world war, a Wardens' Post stood outside the original entrance to the school. This was demolished during exterior works to the school in 1977 and all that remained of the post was the concrete base of a flower bed which was subsequently removed in February 2012 when this area was refurbished.
