HISTORY OF CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOL
1966
In July 1966, the school celebrated its centenary.
The celebrations included a special thanksgiving service in Christ Church conducted by the Lord Bishop of Kingston, a pageant put on by the pupils covering the main events of the past 100 years in the school hall and an open day where distinguished visitors were shown round the school.
The pageant included Queen Victoria’s reign, extracts from the works of Charles Dickens, events from the two world wars and readings of Churchill’s speeches.
"The biggest week in our history," was how the headmaster of Christ Church School, Battersea, Mr. Albert Funnell, described the centenary celebrations which are still continuing.
To mark the occasion the school, built in 1866, before the days of universal state education, has received a certificate signed by the archbishop of canterbury.
For the main event of the week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, 180 children in costumes that had been made by the staff or borrowed from other sources, put on a pageant covering the events of the past 100 years. Scenes included queen Victoria’s reigning over the British empire, extracts from the works of dickens, events of the two world Wars and readings of Churchill's speeches. Nearer home the children acted out the dedication of the new Christ Church and the new school hall.
Last Saturday the Mayor and Mayoress of Wandsworth, Cllr. and Mrs. A. A. Loughton, officials of the Inner London Education Authority and parents attended a thanksgiving service at the church. Heads of other schools were at the open day on Monday and yesterday was prize day.
Pupils have been given today off and on Monday they will sit down to tea and an entertainment.
Mr. Funnell has launched a centenary appeal to help meet the cost of the celebrations and assist future developments."
